Reddit user u/birthdayaitaaccount is a father of four kids. His oldest, Zara who is 23 years old had recently been having trouble coping with life, we all have those phases. OP decided, to make her feel better, on Zara’s 24th birthday they would throw surprise party. The day came, everyone was at the party and Zara was having a good time too. Things were working. But when the time came to blow out the candles and cut the cake, before Zara could do it OP’s 5-year-old niece blew almost all the candles. Zara quietly blew out the remaining candles and started crying.
OP called Zara selfish and a brat for crying out birthday cake candles and that upset her even more. OP’s other kids called his behavior toward Zara unfair. So he decided to call upon the community members of the subreddit “Am I The A$$hole?” to know if calling Zara a selfish brat was the right thing to do or not.

2. Because Zara was going through a difficult patch in life, her family decided to throw a surprise party on her birthday.
3. When the time came to cut the cake before Zara could blow out the candles, her 5-year-old cousin did it before her.
4. Zara blew out the remaining lit-up candles on the cake but was really angry about what happened, and started crying.
5. The niece’s mother got really embarrassed and kept explaining to everyone that the little girl’s intentions were never to hurt Zara.
6. OP then confronted Zara about the whole scene and called her a selfish brat for crying over birthday candles.
7. This upset Zara even more and OP’s other kids also support her, saying their father was unfair.
OP is a major YTA. He has been a father for 23 years now and he still doesn’t realize how terribly his daughter could have reacted to that statement. He called her selfish for crying over candles when it wasn’t the candles she was crying over. Blowing those candles would have made her feel better, it was all about making her feel better, and that is why OP threw the party. And then he decided to ruin it himself for his daughter.
Zara definitely deserves an apology for this.
