Compromising with neighbours can be especially challenging.
As we all know, finding a happy medium between compromise and not letting people walk all over you is much more difficult than it appears at first glance. This is especially true when dealing with neighbours. Some people will take a mile when you give them an inch, leaving you to deal with the consequences. I’m sure we’ve all had it with neighbours who expect everything from you but give nothing in return. At the end of the day, they are simply entitled people who believe they are entitled to respect simply because they exist.
That’s the type of story we’ll be reading today. I’m not saying that no one should be neighbourly or friendly with their neighbours, but one must be very selective about who to give leeway to and who to ignore. This person, you see, used to let their previous neighbours use the driveway. OP did this because their previous neighbours were older and would have had to walk much further if OP did not allow it. However, the newer neighbours expected this treatment as well, even though it would cost them nothing to walk a short distance. After all, it didn’t matter because OP only had one car. However, things quickly changed, and his driveway is now usually very full. The new neighbours, on the other hand, expect the same treatment.

The title makes him sound petty but OP has a good reason for it.
Especially since they are trying to build over his property line.
It all started when he let his previous neighbours use his driveway for parking.
It was only out of the good of his heart as the driveway belonged to him.
However, the neighbours soon moved out and OP’s situation with the driveway also changed.
Things were going well until he came back from vacation.
The neighbours were building over his property line.
Things obviously got heated and words were exchanged.
Because of this, OP decided to put a fence around his area.
He also explained why he thinks he may be being too petty.
His girlfriend certainly seems to think that he isn’t in the right.
This story is more complicated than it appears at first. To me, it’s clear that the neighbours believed they had the right of way. That doesn’t make their response to all of this any better, but it does provide us with a better explanation. After all, it is not the OP’s fault that they did not thoroughly read the documents or inquire about it with the realtor. He also has the authority to refuse to sell a portion of his driveway. It may be petty, especially the way he is dealing with it, but they did exchange some heated words, so I believe he is completely justified in his current behaviour.
Most of the people in the comments, however, were on his side.
After all, it is not his fault the neighbours didn’t read the documents.
He was just doing a kind deed for his previous neighbour.
But not everyone deserves that treatment.
What are your thoughts on the matter? Do you think he’s being too petty and should have made some sort of compromise with the new neighbours? Or do you believe the neighbours are entitled? What would you do if you were in this situation? Let us know in the comments section below, and don’t forget to share this story with your friends so they can join in on the discussion as well.
