Brothers Refused To Support Parents Financially After They Got Kicked Out

Family in debt

Dealing with family debt can be a stressful and frustrating experience, especially when you are not the one who caused it. But what if your parents expect you and your sibling to help them pay off the massive credit card debt that they accumulated by spoiling your younger sister? Would you agree to do so, or would you refuse and move out?

That’s the dilemma that a Reddit user u/n1x11 faced. OP told the internet how he and his brother decided to leave their family home and cut off contact with their parents, who wanted them to help pay off their credit card debt amounting to $1500 that they racked up by buying expensive gifts and trips for their younger sister. He and his brother refused and moved out, leaving their parents in a financial crisis. The two used to pay their parents $250 each as financial support, the brothers cut that off too which resulted in the parents not being able to pay off their monthly house mortgage dues. This got the parents in even more trouble as their bank began showing intent to possess their house.

The story was shared on the infamous subreddit “Am I The A$$hole?” by OP to know if what he and his brother did was wrong or not.

1. We will have to explore the rationale. Let’s find out.

2. OP and his brother provide their parents with a combined monthly amount of $500 to support them financially.

3. OP shared their youngest sister, who is only 11, is very spoiled and always gets what she wants. The parents have a separate credit card dedicated to her wishes.

4. One time the parents had to skip food for two whole days to service a payment for their daughter’s next big purchase.

5. OP’s sister is one of those people who will have a great product in her hands but would still go crazy to get the “next best thing”.

6. When the brothers argued about this, a fight erupted in the house which resulted in the them both getting kicked out of the house.

7. The same thing kept happening again and the parents ended up incurring $1,500 in debt because of their daughter’s big list of products she recently got.

8. They demanded OP and his brother step up and pay off the debt.

Why should the brothers pay? The parents still do not understand how much entitlement they have filled up their daughter with. Why buy something knowing you can’t pay it off? Credit cards aren’t toys. No matter how friendly you are with your bank, if you don’t pay their money back, they will rip it out of you.

The only people who should be servicing this debt are the parents and the sister. That’s it! The brothers are nowhere in this scenario.

9. The brothers simply refused to comply.

10. When the siblings got kicked out, they simply waited for their next paychecks and rented a spot out. Problem solved.

11. It is good they blocked their parents. All the texts and calls could really have been bothersome.

12. That was a close call. Nice presence of mind, OP.

13. OP was informed because they stopped the payment to their parents, the bank was going to repossess their house owing to the inability to pay the mortgage.

14. Although OP and his brother were confident in their decision, this issue regarding the mortgage made the two knock on the doors of the AITA community to know if they were in the wrong or not.

Here’s what the internet had to say about this:

15. Yeah, why are they even asking the brothers? They should sell off all the products the sister owns and square off everything.
